Magnetic Armored Storage Review: Unraveling the Power of Premium PRMM16R9
The Tiny Titan: Armari’s Magnetar PrMM16R9 Workstation
In a departure from the usual bulky workstations, Armari has introduced the Magnetar PrMM16R9, a £4,500 powerhouse that packs a punch in a surprisingly small package. Measuring in at a quarter to a third smaller than other cases on the market, the Phanteks Evolv Shift XT chassis is both stylish and mesmerizing, featuring an infinity mirror on the front that appears to stretch infinitely into the case.
Despite its compact size, the PrMM16R9 is equipped with workstation-grade components, including a 240mm liquid-cooling system for the CPU and an 850W PSU. However, the only downside is the lack of USB and audio ports on the front panel.
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and 96GB DDR5 RAM
The Magnetar PrMM16R9 is paired with the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, which, although an older model, still packs a punch. The processor is paired with 96GB of 5,600MHz DDR5 RAM, which takes up both DIMM slots on the Asus ROG Strix B650E-I Gaming WiFi motherboard.
Dual-Wide Graphics Card
The PrMM16R9 can accommodate a dual-width graphics card, and in this case, it’s equipped with the AMD Radeon Pro W7800. This card features 4,800 Stream Processors and 32GB of GDDR6 memory, delivering 576GB/sec of bandwidth.
Storage Drives
Another surprising inclusion is the pair of storage drives: a 2TB Crucial T705 NVMe M.2 device with a PCI Express 5 interface, and a secondary 2TB Kioxia Exceria Pro NVMe drive running at PCI Express 4 speeds.
Performance
The Magnetar PrMM16R9 delivers impressive performance, with an overall score of 729 in the PC Pro media benchmarks. The system outperforms the InterPro’s Core i9-14900K CPU in several areas, including image editing, video encoding, and multitasking.
SPECviewperf 2020 and Geekbench ML
In SPECviewperf 2020, the PrMM16R9 shows excellent 3D animation modeling ability, with results of 230 in 3dsmax-07 and 757 in maya-06. The AI inference score is also impressive, with results of 24,623 in Geekbench ML and 12,617 with LuxMark 3.1 OpenCL.
Conclusion
While the Armari Magnetar PrMM16R9 may not have won our Labs test due to its reliance on a previous-generation AMD Ryzen processor, the upgrade to the Ryzen 9 9950X will be available at no extra cost by the time you read this. Nonetheless, this is still a great-looking compact system that punches above its size. With its stylish design, impressive performance, and abundance of storage, the PrMM16R9 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a powerful desk-friendly workstation.
