Lobo Takes Flight: Jason Momoa Leads the Charge as DCU’s Rogue Superhero in New Supergirl Film

The Perfect Cast: Jason Momoa to Play Lobo in the Upcoming Supergirl Movie

Imagine a world where you don’t need YouTube videos of people arranging objects in pleasingly symmetrical formations to get your daily dose of excitement. Introducing Jason Momoa, cast as the one and only Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie. That’s right, folks! According to Deadline, Momoa will be joining forces with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl in the highly anticipated film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The Perfect Match

Momoa recently confirmed the casting news on his Instagram post, hinting at his long-held ambition to play Lobo, one of the most flamboyant characters in the DC Comics universe. And who can blame him? Resemblance isn’t enough to guarantee good superhero casting, but Momoa and Lobo share a striking resemblance. It’s also undeniable that Lobo’s persona, with its big personality, physicality, and a healthy dose of humor, is a perfect match for Momoa’s favorite roles.

The Evolution of Lobo

Lobo, a character created by Keith Giffen and Roger Slifer in 1983, initially began as a relatively minor alien villain. However, in the 1990s, Giffen, artist Simon Bisley, and other creators revamped him as a parody character. This revamped Lobo became a huge, hairdo-inspiring, cigar-chomping, space-motorcycle-riding, and chain-swinging intergalactic bounty hunter. He’s a rude, crude, and murdering dude, designed as a satirical take on the Punisher, Wolverine, Judge Dredd, and other ’90s comic book characters obsessed with extreme violence and grit.

A Character for the Ages

As one DC Comics movie aptly put it, "You either die a parody or live long enough to see yourself become a character everybody loves for exactly the parts of you that were supposed to be over the top." Lobo abides, with his distinctive sci-fi slang (bastich, fraggin’), his space chopper, his tendency to refer to himself as "the Main Man," and his ability to somehow smoke cigars in the vacuum of space. He’s strong enough to take on Superman but so annoying that even low-powered heroes find him infuriating and frightening.

A Perfect Fit for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

You won’t find Lobo in the actual comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but he fits right in with the series’ travelogue format, showcasing the strangest parts of the DC Comics intergalactic landscape. He could be a supporting character or even a replacement for the comic’s main villain, a space outlaw that a space farmgirl hires Supergirl to avenge.

The Future of Supergirl

Momoa, fresh from his success as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the Justice League and Aquaman movies, has undoubtedly found the perfect new project. Momoa’s Lobo is going to be a game-changer for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and we can’t wait to see how this dynamic duo comes together to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.
