A Short History of Presidential State Cars
The first president to use a car was Franklin D. Roosevelt, who got behind the wheel of a 1936 Packard Touring Limo. However, it wasn’t until the U.S. involvement in World War II that armored vehicles became a priority. The Seized Al Capone gangster ride was initially used as a quick fix before the Lincoln K "Sunshine Special" arrived in 1942, fully armored. Lincoln continued to produce presidential state cars until the 1980s, when Cadillac took over with the 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood. This Fleetwood marked the last production sedan used by the president until the GM stopped making the B-body civilian Fleetwood in 1996, leaving America without a suitable production sedan for the job.

This rare opportunity to own a piece of presidential history comes with a special set of challenges. The vehicle is part of Lot S45 of the Mecum Kissimmee 2025 auction, scheduled to take place on January 18. With its armored body and bulletproof glass, this limousine is more than just a luxury ride – it’s a symbol of prestige and security.
