Legacy Nissan Y61 Patrol Still Roaming Free: A Rare Model Available for Sale
The Most Enduring SUV on Earth: The 1997 Nissan Patrol Still Going Strong
In a world where cars are designed to be updated and replaced every few years, Nissan’s Y61-generation Patrol is an anomaly. Launched in 1997, this rugged, no-frills SUV has defied industry norms, remaining in production for over two decades. You won’t find it on most dealerships in North America, but the Y61-generation Patrol still sells in the Middle East and South America, with some countries even still accepting orders for the latest models.
Evolution, Not Revolution
The latest iteration of the Patrol Safari, launched in 2024, doesn’t deviate much from the original design. Externally, you’ll spot subtle updates like new headlights, a revised grille, and chunkier flares. The basic structure, now a quarter-century old, soldiered on for over two decades. The interior, as old as the ’97 model, also failed to change much. New owners, rejoice! Well, sort of.
Transmission Choices: Stick or Shift
Gone are the days of car enthusiasts missing out on a manual transmission update. Alas, the Y61-generation Patrol’s transmission options haven’t changed much since its inception. You can still find the super- speeds manual transmission offered, but opt for an extra-cost five-speed automatic gearbox, available for the tech-phobic. Industry leaders, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Jeep Wrangler, also started life with fewer gears. The Y61-generation Patrol never changed.
Getting Your Hands on a Y61 Patrol
The hunt for a 2024 Y61 Patrol Safari is on! Visit the Middle East or South America and you can find these beasts selling in local dealerships. Unfortunately, pricing information is scarce, but used market listings for a few 2024 models with delivery mileage have been spotted between AED 230,000 (approximately $62,700) and AED 255,000 (about $69,500). The current generation starts at AED 239,900 (roughly $65,400) in the United Arab Emirates.
Longevity: A Golden Nugget in an Ever-Changing World
The super- speeds manual transmission option, a nod to the past. Can the Y61-generation Patrol continue to thrive in a world of increasing competition? We’ve reached out to Nissan for updates on the model’s future, but for now, the Y61-generation Patrol remains a golden gem in an ever-changing automotive landscape.
In Defense of Simplicity
In a world where features and technology abound, the Patrol’s simple, rugged design offers a unique appeal. Body-on-frame SUVs have long been revered in the Middle East, and the Nissan Patrol once again leads the pack. In 2023, the best-selling car in the United Arab Emirates was the Nissan Sunny sedan, followed by the Patrol. In November 2024, it took the top spot once more.
Tribute to an Icon
To the Y61-generation Patrol’s resilience and enduring popularity, we raise a glass. It’s a testament to the power of simplicity and the enduring appeal of a no-frills, off-road-ready SUV. The Toyota Land Cruiser’s 70 Series, now in its 40th year, and the Lada Niva, soon to reach 50, stand alongside the Y61-generation Patrol as icons of their respective eras.
