The 2025 McLaren Artura: A Thrilling and Thrifty Green Supercar

In the world of supercars, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been gaining popularity in recent years. The flexibility it offers is unbeatable, providing the benefits of internal combustion and the convenience of electric-only propulsion for daily driving needs. When money is no object, the convenience factor takes a significant leap forward. Take the 2025 McLaren Artura, the British company’s latest entry-level supercar, which has replaced the 570S. Trickle-down lineage

It’s hard to ignore the comparisons between the 2025 Artura and its direct ancestor, the legendary P1 hypercar. However, 10 years later, trickle-down tech has made the Artura a downright bargain, with a starting price less than a quarter of the P1’s original $1.5 million sticker. The Artura boasts an electric-only range of up to 19 miles, 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds, 0-100mph in 5.5 seconds, and a top speed of 205mph. These performance figures are comparable to the P1’s, but with similar output (690 horsepower) and a more reasonable 3,300-pound curb weight to put through the rear wheels.

A unique supercar driving experience

The Artura’s trickle-down tech creates a fascinating driving experience. The car’s output comes from a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine and axial flux electric motor, connected to the rear wheels. The battery, weighing 194 pounds and boasting a net capacity of 7.4kWh, takes 2.5 hours to charge from 0-80% using a standard 240V outlet.

By default, the Artura springs to life in its all-electric mode, creating an interesting symphony along the way. It also has no reverse gear; instead, McLaren uses the motor for reverse. When the engine is running, a third clutch sits in the transmission to make the experience as seamless as possible. If you didn’t know, you’d never notice it only has eight forward gears.

Thrilling yet thrifty

With ample clear tarmac ahead, the 2025 McLaren Artura was phenomenal. Thanks to the electric motor filling in gaps in the turbo-fed torque curve, it launched aggressively, making its sub-six-second 0-100mph time quite believable. From there, the Artura displayed seamless, uninterrupted high-speed confidence. Its 19-inch Pirelli P Zero Corsa Summer tires made the most of its finely tuned chassis, exhibiting immense cornering grip and stability. Its hydraulic steering was extremely communicative, responsive, and busy, relaying every crease in the tarmac at all times.

The 2025 McLaren Artura may be a quarter-million-dollar supercar, but it’s possible to tool around town like any more everyday PHEV, such as the Toyota Prius Prime. The same equipment integrated into its powertrain boosts fuel economy and performance, making it a nicely equipped luxury experience featuring a suite of modern ADAS. For anyone seeking a high-performance machine with all the personality, livability, and thrills, McLaren’s latest offering is hard to disagree with.
