Lara Croft’s Most Epic Quest Yet: The Thrilling Truth About Tomb Raider Season 2
The Evolution of Lara Croft: Uncovering the Mystery Surrounding the Tomb Raider Series
As a fan of the Tomb Raider series, you’ve likely spent countless hours wondering how the series’ narrative fits together. Specifically, you might be curious about the transformation of the original Lara Croft from the 1990s games to the rougher-around-the-edges Lara we see in the Survivor trilogy. What happened in between to make it all cohere?
New Hopes and New Directions
Fortunately, answers are on the horizon. Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has revealed a new design for Lara, blending her post-Survivor trilogy look with throwback costuming, solidifying the "unified" timeline. But as far as the story goes, the new Netflix animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, is taking a bold step forward.
Charting New Territory
Showrunner Tasha Huo recently shared that her goal for the Netflix series is to chart the gap between the Survivor trilogy and classic games. However, Lara won’t reach that point by the end of season 1, even after defeating the Light, finding closure over Conrad Roth’s death, re-bonding with his daughter Camilla, hugging it out with Jonah, and accepting her first dual pistols. That’s because Huo wants to lay the groundwork for future stories, ensuring the show’s longevity. She’s determined to take her time in developing Lara, avoiding the temptation to fast-track her to classic form.
The Road Ahead
In season 2, Lara will embark on a search for her friend Sam, who first appeared in the 2013 game Tomb Raider. The dropped phone call from Sam’s past work with a shady individual sets Lara on a high-stakes adventure. While season 1 teased some subtle hints about Sam’s location, the story’s direction remains largely shrouded. However, Huo promises a carefully planned narrative that will allow Lara to continue growing and exploring new aspects of her personality.
Growing Up and Growing In
As Lara navigates her journey, she’ll also need to confront her sense of humor. In Huo’s words, "Maybe she finds it in Sam, who has a lighter personality. There are also many more lessons for Lara to learn, and how those adventures challenge her to take those increasing steps closer to being the woman we remember from the 1990s."
A Balanced Approach
For Huo, that classic version of Lara is characterized by her hyper-composition, whereas the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series is set at a stage of her life where she’s still evolving. While Lara would rather raid a tomb than attend therapy, Huo wants to integrate legitimate self-care and meditation into the narrative. After all, as the showrunner notes, "So much of that comes from meditation, balance, having all of these messy things inside you yet still somehow finding a way through calmness and self-composure. I’m a big proponent of therapy and self-analysis as a way to just grow as a human being. It’s fantastic. And I’m glad Lara can do it. She hates therapy! So using adventure as therapy is a really great way for Lara to learn how to be better."
