Jason Momoa Reprises Iconic Role in Supergirl Movie: Aquaman’s Epic Return

Jason Momoa Trades in His Trident for a BFG in the DC Universe

The eternal debate about cinematic continuity can take a backseat, because Jason Momoa is putting down his trident and picking up a BFG in the form of Lobo, the intergalactic bounty hunter, in the upcoming film, "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." The former Aquaman star is set to join the DC Universe as the titular character in James Gunn’s new film, which is currently scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.

For the uninitiated, Lobo is quite the terror. He’s a merciless alien who causes genocides for his own entertainment and has a particular history of butting heads with Supergirl’s cousin, Superman, in the comics. Momoa shared his excitement about his new role on Instagram, citing Lobo as his favorite comic book character growing up and calling him "the perfect role."

According to reports from Deadline, Momoa’s casting marks the second major project in Gunn’s DC Universe, following the highly anticipated "Superman" film, which is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. It’s been a wild ride for Momoa, who will be trading in his iconic finned look for a more brutal, intergalactic persona.

The Perfect Role

Lobo, as a character, is known for his violent and sadistic tendencies, having once brutally killed Santa Claus, as seen in a violent Christmas special. His history with Superman is full of brutal battles and intense confrontations. Momoa’s involvement in the project ensures that the movie will be filled with action, intensity, and, most importantly, a healthy dose of violent, visceral excitement.

More from the World of DC

While we wait for more details about "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," James Gunn’s DC Universe is expected to expand even further with new and exciting projects. One of the most anticipated films is the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday," which will see Chris Evans make his debut as Doctor Doom in a month’s time. The plot thickens, indeed!

Whether Momoa will also reprise his role as Aquaman in the cinematic universe or if he’ll call it quits with the fishy fins, only time will tell. For now, we can rejoice in the knowledge that Lobo is coming to town, and things are about to get very, very messy.
