IOS 16 iPhone: Bigger RAM Boost for Smarter Performance
Apple dropped its iPhone 16 lineup, but amidst all the hullabaloo about new features and cutting-edge tech specs, one crucial detail was left out: the RAM.
Not surprisingly, Apple kept mum on the subject. Unlike some competitors, the company doesn’t usually go on record about the amount of RAM they pack into their phones. But that doesn’t mean we’re left in the dark.
Thanks to some savvy sleuthing by the folks at MacRumors, we now have a good idea of the RAM situation. Using Apple’s Xcode 16 developer tool, they were able to decipher the specs – a trick that has paid off in the past.
In collaboration with the iSoftware Updates Twitter account, MacRumors reports that all four new iPhone 16 models come with a whopping 8GB of RAM.
This means the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have an extra 2GB of RAM compared to their predecessors, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which respectively sport 6GB and 6GB of RAM.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max seem to be sticking to the same 8GB of RAM as last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The significance of 8GB of RAM lies in the fact that all four iPhones will have access to Apple Intelligence this year – a feature previously limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. But more on that later.
The increased RAM will be backed by the A18 (iPhone 16, Plus) and A18 Pro (iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max) chips, which are the first to be designed with Apple Intelligence in mind.
Both chips run on a second-generation 3nm architecture and boast 6-core CPUs. The A18 Pro takes it up a notch, with a more powerful GPU.
Apple’s official statement proudly proclaims: “The new A18 Pro chip is designed with industry-leading compute power to propel Apple Intelligence, ushering in a new era of pro performance. Built with second-generation 3-nanometer technology and featuring a new architecture with smaller, faster transistors, A18 Pro delivers unprecedented efficiency. The new 16-core Neural Engine is faster and more efficient than the previous generation, powering remarkable on-device performance for Apple Intelligence.”
So there you have it – Apple may not have explicitly mentioned the RAM, but we can now confidently say that all iPhone 16 models come with 8GB of RAM, backed by the power of the A18 and A18 Pro chips.
