Immersive Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Experience Unlocked on PS5 Pro with Revolutionary PSSR Upgrade

PS5 Pro’s PSSR Upgrades: A Step in the Right Direction, But Still a Work in Progress

The PlayStation 5 Pro’s implementation of PSSR (Pixel Super Resolution) machine learning-based upscaling has brought some impressive upgrades to games, but it’s not without its issues. In our testing, several games exhibited serious problems, including Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which suffered from severe image quality issues.

Improved Performance Mode

Respawn, the developer of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, has since implemented the latest version of PSSR, and we’re pleased to report that the performance mode has seen significant improvements. The notorious river run, which previously looked disastrous, now presents much more cleanly. While some PSSR issues still persist, such as a persistent noise on opaque geometry and an unwanted vignetting effect on the edge of the screen, the overall performance is much improved.

Quality Mode Still Has Its Issues

The quality mode, which targets 30fps, has also seen improvements, with a more convincing 4K output from PSSR. However, there are still some issues to address, including "black holes" in the ray-traced global illumination. This problem was present in the previous patch, but it hasn’t been addressed and seems to present more frequently than before.

Ongoing Evolution of PSSR

It’s important to remember that PSSR is still a first-generation product that will evolve and improve over time. While it’s not yet perfect, it’s clear that Respawn has put in additional effort to get the game in shape. We’re looking forward to seeing how PSSR continues to develop and improve.

Impact on Other Games

Beyond Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, we’ve seen several other games address their own PSSR problems by reverting to other upscaling solutions or offering the ability to choose between FSR and PSSR. It remains to be seen whether these games will update with the latest version of PSSR, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on developments.

The Future of PSSR

The recently announced collaboration between PlayStation and AMD, known as Amythest, could potentially yield benefits for PSSR. We’re also excited to see how the Radeon team’s "AI Research Project" will continue to evolve. For now, PSSR is a step in the right direction, but it’s clear that there’s still work to be done.
