Honda’s Elusive EZSnow Hybrid: Unleashing the Rarest of Winter Wheeled Wonders

The Honda EZSnow: A One-Off Winter Wonder

The 1990s were a wild time for Japan’s cultural exports. Cars, music, fashion – everything was a bit more… extreme. Even Japanese automakers, known for their quirky approach to design and innovation, were pushing the boundaries. Honda, in particular, was known for its bold experiments. And then, there was the EZSnow.

A Scooter Turned Snowmobile: What’s Next?

The EZSnow was essentially a scooter transformed into a snowmobile. This oddity was born out of Honda’s desire to create an ultra-accessible, two-wheeled powersports vehicle. It’s an off-road scooter with an electric start, automatic choke, and a centrifugal dry clutch, featuring an underbody bash plate to protect the 90-cc, two-stroke, one-cylinder engine.

Specifications

  • Engine: 90-cc, two-stroke, one-cylinder
  • Power: 7.5 horsepower
  • Torque: 6.7 lb-ft
  • Weight: 223 pounds wet
  • Production run: Estimated 180-300 units
  • Original price: $2,800 (approximately $4,900 in today’s currency)

Why it’s so rare

Despite being designed for off-road adventures, the EZSnow struggled to find its place in the market. The vehicle was never widely marketed, and its production was short-lived, with only a handful of units manufactured between 1991 and 1993. Add to that the fact that many original owners likely modified their EZSnows into motorcycles or sold off parts to repair or upgrade them.

Current status

The EZSnow is an ultra-rare winter toy, making it a true collector’s item. As the original treads are over 30 years old, it’s challenging to imagine replacing them, let alone finding suitable alternatives. Two EZSnows are currently listed for sale by TVP Classics, a Belgian classic bike reseller, with one missing its front ski and the other in need of restoration.

The future of the EZSnow

While it may not be practical or suitable for modern snow-loving enthusiasts, the EZSnow’s eccentric design and nostalgic appeal have captured the imagination of many. For collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts, the EZSnow is a unique chance to own a piece of Honda’s experimental history.

Will you take the challenge to find or restore one of these rare winter wonders?
