The Verdict:
Marvel Rivals has landed with a resounding splash, showcasing a robust 33 Heroes to choose from at launch. While it’s natural to draw comparisons to established titles like Overwatch, Marvel Rivals carves out its own niche with its fast-paced gameplay, engaging heroes, and attention-grabbing visuals.
A Heroic Beginning
Initially, I approached Marvel Rivals with a mix of skepticism and curiosity. With no prior experience playing live service games, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The game’s launch lineup did little to dispel my doubts, with the initial experience feeling overwhelming due to the sheer number of Heroes and abilities.
Breaking Through the Noise
However, it wasn’t until my second night playing that Marvel Rivals clicked into place. The game’s wide range of playable Heroes proved to be the key to my enjoyment. With each character feeling distinct and exciting to play, I found myself experimenting with new heroes and strategies, which greatly enhanced my overall experience.
Visuals and Audio
Visually, Marvel Rivals boasts an impressive and stylish design, blending anime and comic book aesthetics with impressive character animations. The sound design is equally impressive, with a catchy soundtrack and effective sound effects that draw you into the action.
The Fun Factor
What truly sets Marvel Rivals apart is its sheer fun factor. The game’s competitive multiplayer modes offer a thrilling experience, with matches often feeling tense and unpredictable. While the game’s matchmaking can be wonky at times, the overall excitement of playing with and against others keeps me coming back for more.
A Few Nits to Pick
While Marvel Rivals excels in many areas, it’s not without its flaws. The game’s screen can become cluttered with characters and abilities, making it difficult to track what’s happening on screen. Additionally, some maps feel unbalanced, with choke points that can lead to frustrating matches.
Should You Play Marvel Rivals?
If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced multiplayer experience with a variety of playable characters, Marvel Rivals is definitely worth checking out. However, if you’re easily frustrated by competitive games or are looking for a more refined experience, you may want to consider other options.
Don’t Play It If…
…you’re extremely particular about competitive balance and fairness. Marvel Rivals can be a bit rough around the edges, with some Heroes feeling overpowered and others underwhelming.
Accessibility
Marvel Rivals offers a standard suite of accessibility options, including colorblind mode and customizable UI colors. However, control scheme customization and other options are limited.
How I Reviewed Marvel Rivals
I played Marvel Rivals for 25 hours on the PS5 Pro, focusing on maining five heroes and completing Daily, Weekly, and Seasonal challenges. I used a standard DualSense Wireless Controller and Razer Blackshark V2 headphones connected via the controller port.
