For some time now, Google Maps has been stuck in a blue rut, with the app’s buttons and UI elements sporting a trusty blue accent. That all changed recently, as a teal accent color has begun rolling out to Google Maps users on both iOS and Android.

What’s the Deal with Teal?

It’s unclear why Google chose teal, a color that’s not exactly aligned with the company’s usual palette. The usual suspects – blue, red, yellow, and bright green – have all made appearances in various Google products, but teal seems like an oddball choice. We’ve reached out to Google for more information, but so far, no word on why the company decided to mix things up.

Wide Rollout

The server-side change is not yet widely rolled out on Android or iOS, but users have reported seeing the teal accent color in the latest updates. It’s a relatively subtle change, but it’s a departure from the blue we’ve come to expect from Google Maps.

Update: iOS and Android

As of December 12, the teal accent color has been spotted on iOS devices (version 24.49.3), with an introductory message explaining that it’s "the same great app, now with fresher colors." Meanwhile, Android users are starting to see the change, too, with the floating action button (FAB) and accent color for the currently selected tab shifting to teal.
