In a move to declutter its interface, Google Photos for Android has removed the "Memories" tab from its bottom bar, replacing it with a simplified three-tab layout. The change is now rolling out to users with version 7.11 of the app.
The new bottom bar features three tabs: Photos, Collections, and Search, or the Gemini-powered "Ask" feature. This cleaner design aligns with the recent redesign of Google Maps, which also condensed its bottom bar to three tabs.
What’s Behind the Change?
The "Memories" tab, which was introduced last August, has been rebranded as "Moments" and can now be found in the Collections tab. This change is part of a de-prioritization of the "Memories" brand in Google Photos, which now solely refers to the carousel at the top of the main grid.
No Change in Functionality
The removal of the "Memories" tab does not affect the app’s functionality. Users can still access their best moments, add details, search, and share with others.
Rolling Out Now
The updated Google Photos app with the simplified bottom bar is now available as a server-side update. However, it’s not yet widely available, so users may need to wait for the update to roll out to their devices.
