Google Confirms Android 15 Rollout: New Features Arrive for Pixel Devices in Weeks

Google just pushed the final version of Android 15 to the Android Open Source Project, and while it’s not a public release just yet, it’s an important milestone. For developers and manufacturers, this means they can grab the code, tweak their apps and releases accordingly.

We’re not there just yet, but it won’t be long before the update hits our pockets. Google says Pixel phone users, like the Google Pixel 9, will get the update “in the coming weeks” – which is likely October – while other manufacturers, such as Samsung, will see the update “in the coming months.”

So, what’s new in Android 15? Well, you might recall that back in May, we learned about some exciting features during Google I/O 2024, like a Private Space for your most important apps, better support for multitasking on large screens, improved battery life, and a low-light camera boost. Now it’s up to Google, Samsung, OnePlus, and others to add their own custom flourishes before the final release.

In other news, Google has pushed out four new Android updates without specifying which versions they’ll work on, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be compatible with most modern phones and tablets. Earthquake alerts, audio descriptions powered by Gemini AI, and more await. Here are the juicy deets:

  1. Earthquake alerts expanding: After years of experimentation, the feature is finally heading across the US. The expanded rollout means a lot more people can get alerted to seismic activity, according to Google’s blog post. If you’re using Android, you’ll see more detailed information about images in chat threads, online shopping, or camera roll descriptions.
  2. Audio descriptions powered by Gemini AI: Gemini AI, now powering TalkBack, can describe images more thoroughly for those with visual impairments. Expect more accurate details about what’s on screen, whether it’s in a chat, an e-commerce site, or camera roll.
  3. Search for music with Circle to Search: Yes, you read that right – Circle to Search, an Android feature that started with identifying songs. Press the home button, hit the music button, and your phone will hum back, identifying the song even when it’s not currently playing.
  4. Chrome can read out webpages to you: After previously testing this feature, it’s now official! Tap the three dots, select “Listen to this page,” and have your Android Chrome browser read aloud with simple playback controls, speed control, and choice of voices.

Keep it tuned for more techy news, reviews, opinions, and top deals as we get closer to that final Android 15 release.
