Galaxy Watch FE Review: Is it Worth the Hype or a Disappointment?

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch FE: A Step Backwards in Time?
The Galaxy Watch FE is out, and it’s giving me whiplash. On one hand, it’s trying to balance classic Galaxy Watch design DNA with excellent health-tracking metrics at a reasonable price. On the other hand, it’s essentially a Galaxy Watch 4 with a different name. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking – why not just keep the 4 and make some improvements? That’s what Samsung did with its mid-range Fan Edition series, except when it doesn’t. Remember the poor performance and 5G-ready model? Yeah, that wasn’t great either.
So, what’s the big deal with the Galaxy Watch FE? Its tiny body might be its biggest issue. It has the smallest battery we’ve seen on a Galaxy Watch in a few years, paired with the smallest display and thickest bezels I’ve seen on a modern smartwatch. Don’t get me wrong, I like small watches, but this one feels like a relic from the past.
But here’s the thing: the Galaxy Watch FE walks like a Galaxy Watch 4 and talks like a Galaxy Watch 4 because it is a Galaxy Watch 4. It has the same tiny 247mAh battery and Exynos W920 chipset that Samsung rolled out three years ago. Now, I’m not asking for a full-on redesign, but wouldn’t a slight upgrade in battery life and display quality be nice? Especially at this price point?
Sadly, the pint-sized battery holds a pint-sized charge, barely making it 24 hours before it needs a recharge. If you go to bed with anything less than 30% remaining on your Galaxy Watch FE, you’re guaranteed to wake up to a dead watch – or at least one with extreme power saving turned on.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But wait, there are other options!” And you’re right, there are. The Pixel Watch 2, the Galaxy Watch 6, the OnePlus Watch 2R – they all offer bigger displays, larger batteries, and better features at this price point. Heck, you could even get your hands on a Galaxy Watch 4 for the same price! So, do yourself a favor and save your hard-earned cash for something a little more…future-proof.
