Ford Recalls 300,000 Super Duty Diesel Trucks Due to COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Defect

Ford Issues Recall for 300,000 Trucks Due to Biodiesel-Related Issue

The COVID-19 pandemic may be a thing of the past, but its impact on the automotive industry is still being felt. Ford has issued a recall for nearly 300,000 Super Duty and Medium trucks, citing a problem with their 6.7-liter diesel engines.

The Issue

The recall affects Ford F-Series Super Duty and Medium Truck models (F250, F350, F450, F550, F600) from 2020-2022, which came equipped with the 6.7L Power Stroke engine. The problem lies with the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), which is prone to failure due to the buildup of deposits caused by aged biodiesel.

How It Happens

The deposits form on the pump drivetrain roller and inside the tappet body cooling passages, leading to increased wear on the pump components and debris in the fuel system. As a result, partial pump failure can cause issues such as long cranks, poor power delivery, and a check engine light. In extreme cases, the HPFP can fail entirely, leaving drivers stranded.

Ford’s Investigation

Ford initially suspected a bad batch of fuel pumps, but after further investigation, they discovered that the root cause was the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on fuel storage and quality. The company observed an uptick in warranty claims and reviewed returned parts from the field, only to find that many cases were linked to biodiesel deposits.

The Fix

Ford has updated the part and reprogrammed its trucks to improve cooling of the HPFP, reducing the buildup of aged biodiesel deposits. Owners of the affected trucks will receive these updates, while those who have already had their fuel pumps serviced or replaced due to this issue will be eligible for compensation from Ford.

What You Can Do

If you’re a Ford truck owner with a 2020-2022 F-Series Super Duty or Medium truck, check your VIN to see if your vehicle is affected by this recall. Stay informed and take action to ensure your safety on the road.
