Exploring the Titanic’s Implosion: Inside the World’s Most Fascinating Wreckage Tour

The Mysterious Case of the Titan Submersible’s Sudden Demise

The Search Effort

The United States Coast Guard had been scouring the ocean floor with remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) while using a combination of methods to locate the sub. From overhead flights, buoys on the surface, and expedition ships, all aimed to detect signs of the sub. However, it wasn’t until June 22nd that the Coast Guard reported an ROV discovered debris from the Titan about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic, leading search crews to believe that the sub imploded soon after its departure, resulting in the tragic loss of all five passengers on board.

The Fateful Crew

The ill-fated sub carried an eclectic group of passengers, including 58-year-old British billionaire Hamish Harding, who previously flew on a suborbital flight with Blue Origin in June 2022. The other passengers were Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman Dawood, 77-year-old French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and Stockton Rush, the 61-year-old CEO of OceanGate, the submersible’s operator.

The Riveting Story of the Titan

The Titan was a small, five-person submersible designed to dive to depths of 4,000 meters for various purposes such as site survey, research, data collection, film and media production, and deep sea testing of hardware and software. Its operator, OceanGate, stresses the importance of using these vessels for exploring the ocean’s depths.

A Glimpse into the Sub’s Interior

Inside the Titan, the passengers would have experienced a unique environment. The submersible resembled a tube with a single viewport, a small toilet, and touchscreens for monitoring sonar and controlling the sub. A screen displayed the external 8K camera’s feed, and the vessel was controlled using a Logitech game controller. The price for an eight-day trip, including the submersible dive to the Titanic, was a staggering $250,000 per seat.
