Neil Gaiman’s Projects: The Latest Developments After Sexual Assault Allegations
As the dust settles on the allegations of sexual assault against novelist Neil Gaiman, the creative giant has largely retreated from the public eye. While the details of the allegations continue to unfold, Gaiman’s professional projects have become the focus of much speculation. In this article, we’ll break down the current status of his TV and film adaptations.
Anansi Boys
Production on the Amazon Prime Video series, based on Gaiman’s 2005 novel, has been in post-production for several years. The show is set to premiere in 2025, although no official release date has been announced. Gaiman served as showrunner and executive producer, writing the season’s first and last episodes.
Dead Boy Detectives
The Netflix show was canceled at the end of August 2024 after a single season. The streaming giant didn’t comment on whether the decision was influenced by the initial wave of sexual-assault allegations. Weak streaming numbers, according to Variety, were likely a contributing factor.
Good Omens Season 3
The final season of the show will tie up the story with a single 90-minute episode, expected to begin filming in early 2025. Production on the season halted following the allegations, with Gaiman and his production company eventually stepping back from the show. A new writer will take over for Gaiman, although no official announcement has been made.
The Graveyard Book
Disney indefinitely paused its adaptation of Gaiman’s novel in September 2024, according to IndieWire. The film "has not been scrapped," but multiple factors, including the allegations, contributed to the delay.
The Sandman
Season 2 will still release in 2025, although Netflix announced it will be the last season. Sources quoted in Variety stated that the decision was made independent of the allegations against Gaiman.
Other Projects
Beyond the film and TV projects, several other initiatives Gaiman was involved in have been either scuttled or had collaborators distance themselves from him. A Broadway musical based on Coraline was canceled in light of the allegations, and Dark Horse Comics, which published a comic adaptation of Anansi Boys, announced it would no longer publish Gaiman’s works.
Marvel’s Miracleman
Marvel has no plans to publish Miracleman: The Dark Age, with co-creator Mark Buckingham reportedly asking to be reassigned off the project in summer 2024. Additionally, Terry Pratchett’s estate has removed Gaiman from a Kickstarter campaign to adapt Good Omens as a graphic novel, offering refunds to those who no longer wish to support the project.
