EU Users Banned from OpenAI’s Cutting-Edge Voice Technology – What’s Behind the Censorship?
ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode: A New Era in Conversational AI
ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice mode is set to launch this week for all ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers, but there’s a catch – it won’t be available in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. But why is that?
According to a tweet by OpenAI, Advanced Voice mode is not yet available in these regions due to the EU AI Act, which restricts the use of AI systems to infer emotions of a natural person. This means that ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice mode, which can recognize emotions in a user’s voice, would be illegal in EU workplaces and schools.
The Persistence of Memory
Advanced Voice mode is a game-changer in conversational AI. With this feature, you can talk to ChatGPT using your smartphone and get responses that make it feel like a real conversation with a human. Advanced Voice mode uses the GPT-4o LLM for faster responses and can interpret text, vision, and audio inputs. For example, you can ask it to look at something with your smartphone’s camera and give an opinion. It can also remember things about you, making your interactions more of a sustained conversation over time.
What’s New in Advanced Voice Mode?
Since the first Alpha version, there have been some significant improvements to Advanced Voice mode. You now get five new voices to choose from – Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale – and a new blue orb visual effect as it talks. Accents in foreign languages have also been improved, making it easier to communicate with ChatGPT in your native language.
How Do I Know If I’ve Got Advanced Voice Mode?
Advanced Voice mode is only available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers. The rollout will be gradual, but you’ll know when you’ve got it because you’ll see a pop-up message next to the entry point to Voice Mode. Unfortunately, Advanced Voice mode is not yet available in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, due to the EU AI Act.
