Android 15 QPR 1 Beta 2: Bringing Desktop Windowing to Pixel Tablets

TL;DR

Android 15 QPR 1 Beta 2 has introduced desktop windowing to the Pixel Tablet, allowing users to run multiple apps simultaneously and resize app windows, just like on conventional desktops. This feature is currently available as a developer option for developers to test their apps with this new user experience.

Android 15 Brings Desktop Windowing to Tablets

Android 15 QPR 1 Beta 2 is now available for supported Pixel devices, and it’s bringing a significant change to the Android platform: desktop windowing. This feature allows users to run multiple apps simultaneously and resize app windows, similar to what you’d experience on a conventional desktop.

How Desktop Windowing Works

To enable desktop windowing, head to Settings > Developer options > Enable freeform windows. Once enabled, all apps will open in full-screen mode by default, but you can press and hold the window handle in the status bar and drag it anywhere to pop out the UI into its own window. You can exit desktop windowing by closing all windows or dragging the window handle back to the top of the screen.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use the keyboard shortcut: Windows/Command/Search button + Ctrl + Down to invoke desktop windowing.
  • You can also exit desktop windowing by using the keyboard shortcut: Windows/Command/Search button + H to run apps as full screen again.
  • Use the menu below the window handle to invoke desktop windowing.
  • Developers, take note: Google’s blog post recommends using adaptive layouts in your apps and supporting multitasking features like drag-and-drop to share content between apps.
