The Dell XPS 13: A Promising but Flawed Laptop
The new Dell XPS 13 is tantalizingly close to greatness, but ultimately falls short due to its unique design choices. The laptop’s radical design, featuring an invisible touchpad and trackpad, is intriguing but also frustrating to use, especially for those who rely on tactile feedback.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Super lightweight design
- Trackpad takes some getting used to, but the feel is very nice
- LCD is plenty bright
Cons:
- Space-less keyboard and touch function row hurt usability
- Performance isn’t all you want for this price
- Sound and webcam quality aren’t great
Performance
The Dell XPS 13’s performance is decent, but not exceptional. The Intel Core Ultra 7 256V processor is capable, but it’s not the most powerful option available. The laptop’s 13.4-inch LCD runs at a 1920 by 1200 resolution with a VSS between 30 and 120 Hz, making it a good option for basic productivity tasks.
Screen, Webcam, and Sound
The XPS 13’s screen is decent, but not spectacular. The 1080p webcam is fair under bright light, but becomes fuzzy in dim lighting conditions. The sound quality is mediocre, with a thin, lacking quality that’s immediately apparent when switching from another laptop.
Battery Life
The Dell XPS 13’s battery life is its biggest selling point. In our video playback tests, the laptop lasted an impressive 23 hours, and daily use left around 40% battery life remaining. This is a strong contender for anyone who wants a lightweight, fanless design.
Verdict
The Dell XPS 13 (9350) feels like a laptop that costs around $1,100, but it’s currently priced at $1,400. While it has an excellent battery life and is extremely lightweight, its design flaws and mediocre performance make it a hard sell. Even on sale, I can’t imagine buying a super-thin laptop for this price when there are other machines available.
