Decades in Development: The Tragic Quest of a Kickstarter’s Most Infamous Failure
The Long and Complicated Saga of Unsung Story: Can it Finally Find a Happy Ending?
After nearly two years of silence, the developers behind Unsung Story, the beleaguered strategy game that was Kickstarted to the tune of $660,126, have made an announcement that’s left many wondering: they’re "getting back on track."
For the uninitiated, Unsung Story has been a long and grueling journey. With a tangled history that involves being put on hold in 2016, sold to another studio, and eventually released in a limited early access form in 2020 to little fanfare, it’s no wonder that many thought it was relegated to the dustbin of gaming history.
The Bumpy Road to Success (Hopefully)
According to Little Orbit CEO Matthew Scott, the game’s recent update has been a mixed bag. While there were some positive early access feedback from players, most of it was overwhelmingly negative. This has put the project in a bit of a pickle: how do you move forward when the current version is considered subpar, but abandoning it altogether may also disappoint backers and fans?
Facing the Music, and Moving Forward
With a healthy dose of self-awareness, Scott acknowledged the flaws in the initial release and revealed that the team is going back to the drawing board. They’re relaunching the game, one screen at a time, and will publish the project plan on Kickstarter. This includes redesigning the main character, replacing 3D model "bobble heads" with traditional 2D portraits, cutting down on excess dialogue, rebalancing the class system, and adding female character models absent in the original release.
A Brighter Future (Maybe)?
While it’s impossible to predict the success of Unsung Story, it’s undeniable that Little Orbit is committed to getting it right, or at least making it right. In the meantime, you can continue to obsess over the latest iteration of Yasumi Matsuno’s masterwork, Tactics Ogre: Reborn.
Stay Tuned for Updates on Unsung Story’s Progress
No doubt, the road ahead will be long and arduous, but perhaps, just perhaps, Unsung Story will finally find its happy ending.
