Crytek Shuts Down Scream Crossover Rumors: No Peter Griffin or Anime Characters in Fortnite

Is Huntdown’s New Crossover Cosmetic the Start of Something Sinister?

Hunt: Showdown’s recent collaboration with Scream’s iconic Ghost Face mask didn’t quite sit well with many players, who felt the horror movie’s influence was a poor fit for the 1890s paranormal extraction shooter. Is this the beginning of the "Fortnite-ification" of Hunt?

In a statement to PC Gamer, Crytek, the game’s developer, assured us that they’re committed to integrating crossover cosmetics with Hunt’s lore, but dismissing the idea of Peter Griffin or anime characters joining the fray in the near future.

"We’ve been searching for partners that can blend into Hunt’s 19th-century world while staying true to themselves and our lore," said Crytek. "These collaborations allow us to build unique stories within the Hunt mythos, inviting new audiences to explore our world for the first time."

So, what’s the deal with the Ghost Face mask? Cryptek’s creative team didn’t always get it right, acknowledging that more narrative explanation was needed before the big reveal. The mask, they explained, is a "deadly heirloom passed down through generations, from killer to killer, finding its way to those easily corrupted by its foul whispers."

But What’s the Real Deal?

Some fans are already on board, willing to give the Ghost Face cosmetic a chance, while others remain unconvinced, citing the mask’s ’90s movie heritage. Perhaps even the skeptical will sympathize with Crytek’s goals: to "capture the attention of horror fans not yet familiar with the Hunt franchise." By bringing in new players, especially those with a passion for horror, the game can expand its fan base.

The question remains: is this the start of a slippery slope, where Hunt becomes a "carnival of garish crossover cosmetics," as some shooters so often do? Crytek assures us it’s not, and we’ll have to wait and see if their next collaborations live up to their promise.
