The All-Too-Common iPhone SE: Can Apple Finally Get It Right?
Let’s face it, I’ve never been a fan of Apple’s budget-friendly iPhone SE. The concept of a more affordable iPhone is one I wholeheartedly applaud, but the execution has always left much to be desired, especially when compared to the Android competition.
Take a look at the current iPhone SE, and you’ll be transported back to 2017, a time before Apple’s transition to Face ID, full-screen displays, and the flat, angular design of newer iPhone models. Instead, you’re stuck with a tiny, low-res 4.7-inch LCD screen, a single 12MP camera on the rear, and battery life that’s woefully short by 2024 standards. To make matters worse, some modern apps don’t even run properly on this device.
Fixing the Big Problems with the iPhone SE
But, here’s the thing: it seems like Apple might be on the verge of getting it right. Rumors are swirling that the next iPhone SE could ditch its dated design in favor of something similar to the iPhone 13. This would be a huge upgrade, as it would address one of the iPhone SE’s most significant issues.
The iPhone 13’s 6.1-inch LTPS OLED screen, with its alleged 1170 x 2532 resolution, is said to make an appearance on the next SE model. This would be a significant jump from the current model’s 4.7-inch, 750 x 1334 LCD screen, which is capped at 60Hz. While this might not be on par with the 90Hz or 120Hz screens found on many Android devices, it’s still a welcome upgrade.
A Major Camera Overhaul?
Other rumors suggest Apple might be planning a major upgrade in the camera department, too. Instead of the single 12MP rear camera found on the current model, the next iPhone SE could pack a more impressive 48MP sensor, similar to the one used in the iPhone 14 Pro, 15, and 16. This would bring a significant improvement in camera performance, although it might not include the ultrawide and telephoto lenses found on higher-end iPhone models.
Fast Performance and Longer Battery Life?
Other rumors point to the same A18 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 16, which would not only deliver a performance boost but also bring improved battery life. This could be a major selling point, as even the current iPhone SE struggles with battery life.
If Apple gets everything right, the next iPhone SE could be a genuinely tempting, great-value iPhone that offers an affordable way into the Apple ecosystem. Sure, it might not be the best mid-range smartphone on the market, but it would certainly be a significant improvement over the current model.
I, for one, can’t wait to see what the future holds for the iPhone SE. With potential releases in March 2025, the wait won’t be too long.
