ChatGPT-5 Debunked: Sam Altman Shuts Down Rumors as Fake News

OpenAI’s Sam Altman Slams Rumors of New ChatGPT Version: “Fake News Out of Control”

The anticipation is building for the next iteration of the popular AI model, ChatGPT, but its CEO, Sam Altman, has just put out a statement that puts the brakes on speculation. In a terse tweet on X.com, Altman slammed a recent report claiming the imminent release of Orion, effectively ChatGPT-5, as "fake news out of control." This move puts an end to rumors of a new version of ChatGPT before December.

The report in question, from The Verge, quoted "sources" as saying that Microsoft is planning to host Orion, the successor to ChatGPT-4, on its servers in November, hinting at a release for the new LLM in time for ChatGPT’s 2nd birthday next month.

ChatGPT’s 2nd Birthday

Altman, known for posting cryptic messages on X.com that hint at upcoming product releases, took to Twitter to share, "Whoa ChatGPT’s 2nd birthday is next month! What should we give it for a birthday present…?" This, followed by a tweet saying, "Many users took this to mean a new product launch was imminent around the time of ChatGPT’s 2nd birthday (ChatGPT was released on 30 November 2022). Altman’s latest X.com post removes any ambiguity around the event.

Eyes on the Sky

In a previous cryptic post, Altman wrote, "I love being home in the midwest. The night sky is so beautiful. Excited for the winter constellations to rise soon; they are so great." Many interpreted this as a hint about the upcoming release of Orion, as the Winter constellation is most visible in the night sky from November to February.
