Can the Future of Gaming Move On from Retro Consoles?

Sega’s Vision for the Future: No More Mini Consoles, Embracing Modern Gamers

Sega has made it clear that they’re not a retro video game company, and as such, they’re ruling out the possibility of more miniature consoles coming to market. The company’s vision for the future is all about embracing modern gamers, not taking a step back into the past.

The Mini Console Dilemma

A few years ago, Sega released a miniature version of the beloved Mega Drive (or Genesis for our American readers) with a plethora of built-in classics from the 16-bit era. However, despite the nostalgia and love for Sega’s classic games, the company has no plans to release more mini consoles.

A New Direction for Sega

In an interview with The Guardian, America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi revealed that Sega is moving away from the mini console route. "I’m not going for the Mini direction. It’s not me. I want to embrace modern gamers," he said. This means that fans of Sega’s classic franchises like Saturn and Dreamcast can expect to see new games and adaptations, rather than rehashed versions of their favorite old games.

A Focus on New Properties and Revivals

Utsumi emphasized that Sega is not a retro company, and instead, they’re focusing on developing new properties and reviving classic franchises in new and exciting ways. This includes iconic series like Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Jet Set Radio.

A Bright Future Ahead

Sega is confident that if they can adapt their classic properties to modern times, they can once again thrive as a force in the gaming industry. As Utsumi put it, "I think gamers will love it if we do this right. It will be a challenge – there are great expectations – but if we can respond to that, we can get back to being Sega."

Revisited Classics and More

The Mega Drive mini brought us a collection of classic titles, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, and Virtua Fighter II. But which classic Sega game would you like to see revisited? Let us know on Bluesky at @trustedreviews.com!
