Bust Revealed: Massive Ford Super Duty Taillight Theft Ring Causing $92,000 in Damage and Devastation

Taillight Theft Epidemic: Thieves Target Ford F-Series Owners for Thousands of Dollars

The war on theft just got a new front: the taillights of Ford F-Series trucks. According to authorities, a sophisticated theft ring in Texas has stolen over $92,000 worth of taillights from 34 victims, with the thieves specifically targeting these high-end pickup trucks.

How They Do It

Thieves have been stealing the taillights from Ford F-350 trucks by simply dropping the tailgate to access the mounting bolts. Two screws are removed, the panel is pulled back, and the latch bars are bypassed. The entire process is quick, easy, and quiet, making it a difficult crime to detect.

The Cost of Complexity

The reason these taillights are so valuable is due to their complexity. They feature LED elements and integrated sensors, making them a valuable target for thieves. For example, a full-LED left-side rear light for a 2023 Ford F-350 can cost around $1,980.37, while a headlight with similar features can cost up to $1,666.67.

Mark Your Lights

Detectives suggest marking your taillights to prevent theft and identify stolen lights. By adding a unique identifier, such as your dog’s name, the last four digits of your social security number, or the house numbers on your home, you can help authorities track down stolen lights and recover them.

Anti-Theft Solutions

One company, Omaha Bravo Designs (OBD), has developed an anti-theft kit called AllGuard that makes it harder for thieves to remove the hood, taillights, and tailgate. The kit includes a plate that covers the Torx bolts and hardware that prevents access to the tailgate’s mounting bolts.

Stay Vigilant

Ford truck owners, beware: this trend is not new and is not specific to Ford trucks. Thieves are targeting taillights from various vehicles, and the complexity of modern components is driving up the cost of theft. Keep your lights secure, and stay informed about anti-theft solutions and tips from authorities.
