Breaking News: 3rd-Gen Celestial GPUs in Development, but Where’s the 2nd-Gen Battlemage?
Intel’s Xe3 GPU Architecture: A Glimpse into the Future of Linux Support
Intel is already laying the groundwork for its Xe3 GPU architecture in Linux, even though it won’t be used in any chips until late 2025 at the earliest. This is exciting news, especially considering that the 2nd-gen Arc graphics, or Battlemage, is only just hitting the scene as integrated GPUs in Lunar Lake laptops.
What’s Happening with Xe3 Support in Linux?
Phoronix reports that Intel engineers are currently working on enabling Xe3 support in the Linux kernel. This is a significant step forward, as it will allow users to harness the power of Xe3 on the open-source operating system. The details are still scarce, but we can expect the Linux driver code to provide more information about Xe3’s potential improvements over its predecessor.
Discrete Celestial 3: A Distant Prospect?
While Xe3 is expected for laptops, the prospect of discrete graphics cards built on Celestial seems further away. In fact, Battlemage discrete GPUs haven’t even arrived yet, and it may take some time before we see standalone graphics cards for desktop PCs.
What’s Next?
Nonetheless, Intel is pushing forward with its integrated graphics, as seen in Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake mobile processors. With these advancements, we can only speculate about the possibilities that Xe3 will bring to the table. As we eagerly await more information about Xe3, it’s clear that Intel is committed to staying ahead of the curve with its architecture.
