Android Automotive is now on par with Auto as live incident reporting in Google Maps is rolling out to the in-car OS. This feature, first launched on mobile devices a few years ago, is now available on Android Automotive, allowing users to report incidents such as crashes, congestion, roadworks, and more directly from the Google Maps app.
Android Automotive: The Differences
While Android Auto is essentially a tethered phone-led experience that plugs into your car, Android Automotive is designed to be a car-first system, posing unique challenges for software updates and user experience. However, this also allows Android Automotive to integrate more deeply with the vehicle and its features.
The Wait is Over
In July, Google confirmed that live incident reports were coming to both Android Auto and Automotive. While Android Auto has already received the update, Android Automotive users have had to wait a bit longer. But the wait is now over, as reports are flooding in from Android Automotive users who are already enjoying the feature.
Using the Incident Reporting Feature
To access the incident reporting feature in Google Maps on Android Automotive, simply open the app and tap the yellow hazard triangle icon in the sidebar. From there, you can tap on a specific incident type to report, including crashes, congestion, roadworks, lane closures, and more. One limitation is that you can only make one report per road in our brief testing, so keep that in mind.
More on Android Automotive
Android Automotive is an in-car operating system that integrates with the vehicle and its features, providing a more seamless and intuitive user experience. With its growing feature set and fast pace of updates, Android Automotive is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the automotive world.
