Boost Home Security with Yale’s Smart Video Doorbell and Chime System
Yale Smart Video Doorbell and Doorbell Chime: A Two-Minute Review
The Yale Smart Video Doorbell and Doorbell Chime set lets you see and speak to visitors from anywhere, as long as you have a mobile phone connection. This isn’t a new concept, but this is a great alternative solution – and one that’s more affordable.
Setting it Up
You can either use your existing doorbell wiring or charge the doorbell via its built-in rechargeable battery using the provided USB-A to USB-C cable. We opted for the latter, which means you’ll need to unclip the doorbell from its bracket and recharge it every few months, depending on usage.
Installation is surprisingly straightforward, thanks to the video installation guides within the Yale Home app. Simply attach the white mounting plate to the door frame with the screws or wall plugs provided, and use the additional "wedge" if you need to angle the plate slightly.
Customizing the Doorbell
Once paired with your home’s Wi-Fi, you can customize the doorbell to your needs. For example, you can name your house, add a photo of it, and edit house owners so your partner, housemates, or kids get alerts if someone comes to the door.
You can also adjust speaker volume, image brightness, night vision, and video quality. Two recording options are available: medium (720p) or high (1080p). You can also detect and record movement like a standard security camera. However, while human detection is provided as standard, you’ll need to subscribe for alerts for pets, packages, and vehicles on your driveway.
Performance
Generally, the Yale device offers good image and sound quality. The only downside is that streaming recorded content and speaking to people at the door can be a little slow.
What to Buy
If you’re in the market for a video doorbell, the Yale Smart Video Doorbell and Doorbell Chime is worth considering. It’s a great alternative to other options on the market, and it offers decent value for money.

How I Tested the Yale Smart Video Doorbell and Doorbell Chime
I used the doorbell every day for several weeks, setting it up myself without any assistance (expert installation is available for £90). The doorbell was set up on the front door facing towards the road. To put the Yale video doorbell to the test, I installed it on my front door for over two weeks, covering up my existing entry-phone system. During this period, it captured hundreds of clips, most of which were generated from delivery people and friends coming to the door.
