Black Myth: Wukong Performance Optimization Strategies for a Seamless Gaming Experience
Black Myth: Wukong is a game that’s going to put your PC hardware to the test, especially if you’re planning to play it on the highest quality settings. Yeah, it looks amazing, with path-traced lighting and all that jazz, but be prepared for some frame rate drops. But don’t worry, the game does offer some significant scaling across various in-game settings, so even those with mid-range or older hardware can still play it with a few tweaks.
So, what does each setting in Black Myth: Wukong do, and how does it affect performance? And what are the optimal settings you should use? That’s what we’re going to explore today.
Before we dive in, let me give you a quick rundown of the test systems we used. We captured all the visual comparisons at 4K using an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, with DLSS Quality to keep the frame rate reasonable. We recommend watching the video footage in YouTube’s 4K mode for the highest bitrate.
Now, let’s talk about the presets without ray tracing enabled. There are five main options, and most of them use Unreal Engine 5’s software Lumen as the basis for the lighting system. The game looks great even at the Medium preset, but if you want the best visuals, you’ll need to crank it up to Maximum.
But here’s the thing: the game’s lighting system is a bit oversharpened, and it could benefit from more control over the sharpness level. And while we’re at it, it would be nice to have more control over individual ray tracing features and a higher-quality texture pack. These are just minor quibbles, though – the game still looks amazing.
One thing that’s missing is HDR support, at least in the preview build we played. We think it would look even better with HDR on a proper HDR display. And while someone might find a way to unlock HDR support, it definitely needs to be updated to support HDR on PC natively.
As an Unreal Engine 5 game, there’s also some traversal stutter, even on high-end hardware. There’s a shader compilation pass at launch, and while the game doesn’t stutter persistently, there are occasional hitches when moving between areas. We’re not sure if this is Game Science’s fault or just a quirk of Unreal Engine.
Overall, Black Myth: Wukong is one of the best-looking games you can play on PC, and we’ve had a blast playing it. The combat is enjoyable, and there are many interesting boss battles as you progress through the world. So, if you’re looking for a visually stunning game with some great combat, Black Myth: Wukong is definitely worth checking out.
