Ben Stiller’s Exclusive Severance Season 1 Finale Reveal: Behind-the-Scenes Insights

The Crazy Way Ben Stiller Filmed the Finale of Severance

As we all try to unravel the complex plot threads of Apple’s Severance, Ben Stiller and his team had to piece together the various scenes to create a coherent and captivating narrative. In the final episode of The Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller and Adam Scott, Ben Stiller shares the fascinating process of filming the season finale, revealing the intricate way he shot the episode in pieces over the nine-month production period.

According to Ben, the finale was shot in a piecemeal fashion, with each scene filmed out of order. For instance, if they were filming a scene at Mark’s sister’s house in episode one, they would also shoot Mark’s cliffhanger moment, "She’s alive!", around the same time. This nonlinear approach wasn’t the only unique directing choice made by Stiller, who originally envisioned shooting the entire finale from the Innies’ perspective outside.

"I always imagined it was going to be totally different, visually, than the rest of the show," Stiller reveals. "We were going to use Steadicam the whole time, and it would be flowing because we wanted to be in the point of view of these characters."

This approach would have provided an immersive experience, with viewers seeing directly into Harmony Cobel’s (Patricia Arquette) judgmental eyes as Mark stammers his way through their conversation. However, this would have robbed us of seeing Mark’s emotional reactions, like his shocked look in the "She’s alive!" moment. Thankfully, Stiller came to his senses.

"It can’t be in their point of view the whole time because then we’ll never see them," he admitted.
