Amazon Still Bullishly Devoted to Fire TV’s Android Integration

Amazon Fire TV Sticking to Android 14, New Hardware Incoming?

The Amazon Fire TV lineup has been a topic of interest lately, with reports suggesting a shift away from an Android base. However, it appears that’s not happening just yet. In fact, it seems that Amazon is still exploring an Android 14-based build for its Fire TV devices.

What’s Changed?

As we reported in late 2023, Amazon was planning to switch to a new platform for all future Fire TV devices. Job listings and the appearance of "VegaOS" on the Echo Show supported this report, but we haven’t heard much since. That is, until AFTVNews spotted developer documentation from Amazon confirming the development of Android 14 for Fire TV devices.

The documentation highlights the importance of considering key changes when building apps for Android 14-based Fire TV. By migrating to standard Android components, developers can reduce the risk of compatibility issues and ease maintenance for their apps.

Where Did “Fire OS” Go?

Interestingly, the documentation doesn’t refer to this platform as "Fire OS," but instead uses "Android 14-based Fire TV." This is the first time Amazon has offered a virtual testing option for the new update, suggesting that new hardware is on the way.

What’s Next?

For now, there are no Fire TV devices actually running these new Android 14 builds. The existence of these builds does suggest that new hardware is upcoming, but Amazon hasn’t made any official announcement yet. We’ll be keeping an eye out for any future developments and bringing you the latest updates.
