Nintendo Axed Plan for Public Release of Alarmo

Nintendo Alarmo: The Bespoke Alarm Clock that divides opinions

Nintendo has been making waves in the gaming world with its innovative products, and its latest creation, Alarmo, is no exception. Alarmo is a unique alarm clock that allows users to wake up to a variety of sounds from popular Nintendo games, such as Mario and Zelda. While it was initially set to release to the general public in January, Nintendo has now announced that it will remain exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members until at least early March.

A Timed Exclusive

A post on Nintendo’s social media channels reveals that Alarmo will be a timed exclusive offering for Nintendo Switch Online members until March, after which it will be available to purchase from select retailers in certain countries. The company hasn’t provided further information on which countries will have access to the alarm clock.

The Verdict is Out

Eurogamer’s review of Alarmo highlights the device’s potential and value, but also raises concerns about its high price tag and limited functionality. According to the reviewer, "As it is, it feels like Alarmo has untapped potential and too high a price tag as a result. I understand the attraction of keeping things simple, and I can also understand a need to be cautious around what an internet-connected device tracks in people’s bedrooms."

Is it Worth it?

The question remains: is Alarmo worth the £90 price tag? While it’s true that the device has its charm, with the ability to wake up to familiar Nintendo game sounds, its functionality may not justify the cost for many. As the reviewer notes, "For now, Alarmo costing £90 makes it hard to recommend. Its motion detector is fun, and I do love that Nintendo still has the capacity to surprise with something like this. But for a company dedicated to making such compelling games, this is a device which forces you to come up with your own."

The Wait Continues

For interested parties, the wait is now temporarily longer, but it’s an opportunity to weigh the pros and cons and consider whether Alarmo is the right addition to your gaming set-up. Will Nintendo’s billing of Alarmo as a "timed exclusive" lead to a crowded market of alternative alarm clocks? Only time will tell.
