Is Toyota Reviving the Respected Previa Minivan? A Necessity or Nostalgic Nightmare?
Retro Revival: Should Toyota Bring Back the Previa?
The 90s were a wild time for the automotive industry, and Toyota was no exception. With the Supra and Land Cruiser back in the fold, the company has been on a bit of a retro kick lately. According to a recent report from Japan’s Best Car, the next model to get a modern makeover is the Previa. But should Toyota bring back this cult classic?
A Blast from the Past
For those who missed the 90s or aren’t familiar with the Previa, it was a mid-engined minivan that housed a four-cylinder engine under the front seats. Yeah, it was a bit of an odd duck, but it’s since become a cult classic. The name "Previa" lives on in subsequent vans sold overseas, but in the US, it’s always the 90s model that comes to mind.
A New Chapter
A new US-market Previa wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea. The next-gen Sienna might still be a few years away, but it’s likely that work has already started on it. Why not simply call it a Previa when it’s released? Alternatively, Toyota could sell the Sienna and Previa concurrently, with the latter being a battery-electric vehicle (BEV). This would allow for a historically accurate, stub-nosed shape and a unique offering in the market.
A Stylized Reboot
Imagine a modern Previa with a stylized "PrEVia" logo. Toyota, you can have that one for free! It’s an opportunity to pay homage to the past while creating something new and exciting for the future. With the Volkswagen ID.Buzz on the horizon, Toyota could create a similar electric vehicle that appeals to a different audience.
The Verdict
While there’s no official word on the Previa’s return, it’s an idea worth exploring. Toyota has shown a willingness to revive and reimagine its past successes, and the Previa has a dedicated following. Whether it’s a modern take on the original or a completely new concept, a Previa reboot could be a game-changer for the brand.
