Unleashing the Power: Nvidia RTX 4070 GDDR6 Review – A Deceptive Downgrade?

Nvidia’s Bait-and-Switch Tactics: The GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 Debacle

It’s become a familiar refrain: every time Nvidia releases a new GPU generation, they do something to confuse and frustrate gamers. With the GeForce 40 series, we thought they would break the cycle. But, alas, we were wrong.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to the GeForce 10 series. Many fondly remember the GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti, but Nvidia also released the budget-friendly GT 1030. A modest product, to be sure, but at a price that wouldn’t break the bank. Or would it?

The Great GT 1030 Switcheroo

The GT 1030 was released with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, providing 48 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Not exactly the most powerful GPU, but it was usable, and with a price tag of just $70, it was an attractive option for budget gamers.

But then, Nvidia pulled a fast one. They began releasing GT 1030 models with desktop DDR4 memory, reduce the memory bandwidth to a paltry 16.8 GB/s. It was like they were trying to deceive us all. And that’s exactly what happened – it was a deceptive move, leaving many buyers wondering which model they were getting.

Fast Forward to the GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 Debacle

Fast forward to the GeForce 30 series, and we thought we had seen the end of this kind of cheap trickery. But, no, Nvidia had other plans. They released the RTX 4070 with 21Gbps GDDR6X memory. Sounds great, right? Well, not so fast.

It seems that some models of the RTX 4070, the GDDR6 version, have the same memory bandwidth as the GDDR6X – 264 GB/s. That’s a 21.4% reduction in performance for the same price. And to make matters worse, there’s no clear indication which version you’re getting when you buy one.

The Verdict: A Frustrating and Deceptive Move

We’re seriously annoyed about this development. It’s not just that Nvidia is making a lower-quality product available for the same price; it’s that they’re creating confusion and uncertainty for consumers. We’re not alone in our frustration – a recent poll on our HUB community tab showed that 70% of respondents were ‘extremely annoyed’ with this situation, while another 20% were ‘more annoyed than they’d like to be.’
