Electric Revolutions Afoot: Toyota’s Big Bet on E-Taxi Future

Toyota Invests Heavily in Electric Air Taxis, Joby Aviation

In a bold move, Toyota has just earmarked another $500 million for Joby Aviation, increasing its total support to nearly $900 million. This significant investment comes as no surprise, considering the automaker’s commitment to electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Joby Aviation: A Pioneer in Electric Air Taxis

Joby, a California-based transportation company, specializes in developing all-electric eVTOL aircraft. With its partnership with Delta Airlines, Joby will provide the last-mile (or first-mile) service for Delta customers, connecting homes to airports in the New York and Los Angeles markets.

Why Electric Air Taxis?

eVTOLs offer a quiet alternative to helicopters, which can be limited by noise restrictions in urban areas. The technology also has potential applications in search and rescue operations, military use, and more. With its noise reduction and eco-friendliness, eVTOLs are poised to revolutionize air travel.

Toyota’s Investment: A Strategic Partnership

Toyota has been embedded with Joby’s development team since 2019, providing engineering expertise and resources. The long-term agreement for Toyota to supply key powertrain and actuation components for Joby aircrafts will further accelerate eVTOL commercialization.

Certification and Commercial Production

The additional investment will help Joby certify its aircraft and transition to commercial production. According to Toyota Motor Corporation’s operating officer, Tetsuo "Ted" Ogawa, "With this additional investment, we are excited to see Joby certify their aircraft and shift to commercial production… We share Joby’s view that sustainable flight will be central to alleviating today’s persistent mobility challenges."

The Future of Air Travel

With Toyota’s significant investment in Joby Aviation, the future of air travel is looking more electric than ever. As the industry continues to evolve, it’s exciting to think about the possibilities eVTOLs will bring to our daily commutes and travel experiences.
