Google Introduces Recorder App on Chromebook Plus: Offline Transcription and More

With the upcoming ChromeOS 130 update, expected later this month, Google is bringing a new Recorder app to Chromebook Plus devices. This app has some striking similarities with the Pixel Recorder app, with key features like real-time offline transcription, speaker identification, and summaries.

Modern Design and Features

The Recorder app boasts a stylish, Material You-inspired interface, complete with a distinctive red waveform icon. On the "My Recordings" homescreen, users will find containers and cards, with the first few lines of the transcript appearing inline. A three-dot button allows users to toggle between More details, Export, and Delete options. For an immersive experience, users can manually shrink the window to resemble a phone app.

Recording Settings and Options

When setting up a recording, users can choose their microphone and select whether to include Chromebook audio or system audio. The app also offers flexible settings, including:

• Do Not Disturb, which silences notifications while recording
• Keep screen on while recording
• Transcription and summary settings, with options for:

+ Audio transcription (100MB offline model)
+ Speaker identification (currently available in English US)
+ Recording summary and file name creation (2GB download)

Recording and Playback

In the fullscreen recording UI, users can view a real-time transcription with a waveform and dual-column view. The UI also features a "Stop recording" button, pause/resume and delete options, and playback controls for adjusting speed, scrubbing the timeline, and searching. Recordings can be exported as.webm audio and.txt transcript files, which are stored locally on the device.

Availability and Integration

The Recorder app will be available with ChromeOS 130, arriving on Chromebook Plus devices at the end of October. It can be paired with a new "Studio-style mic" in "Video call controls" for improved audio quality, utilizing AI-based high-quality mic simulation to reduce noise and room reverberation and make recordings sound "crystal clear."
