Tesla Issues Recall for Rearview Mirror Issue Affecting 27,000 Cybertrucks

Tesla has identified an issue with the rearview mirror on approximately 27,000 Cybertrucks, requiring a software update to resolve the problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filed a recall report highlighting the issue, which may impact a significant portion of Cybertrucks on the road.

The Problem: Delayed Rearview Camera Display

The delayed availability of the rearview camera display is the primary concern. When shifting into reverse, the image may take up to 8 seconds to appear, potentially hindering the driver’s ability to monitor what’s happening behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a collision. Tesla has not reported any fatalities, injuries, or collisions related to this issue.

Free Software Update and Workaround

To address the issue, Tesla is releasing a free over-the-air software update. In the meantime, drivers experiencing the problem can perform a visual check over their shoulder and use their mirrors when reversing the vehicle.

Not the First Recall for the Cybertruck

This is the fifth recall for the Cybertruck, the largest to date. The first recall involved the accelerator pedal cover, which could become loose and cause the pedal to become stuck down. The second recall addressed an issue with small warning light text on the instrument panel, resolved through an over-the-air update. The third recall affected all Cybertrucks manufactured up until June 2024, fixing a problem with an electric motor that could cause the windshield wiper to fail. The fourth recall addressed an issue with black trim on the Cybertruck’s body, which was at risk of falling off while driving.
