The Fundación Desierto de Atacama (Atacama Desert Foundation) has been sounding the alarm for years about the treatment of these ancient sites. Despite posted signage prohibiting driving, various vehicles, including off-roaders, mining trucks, and even desert rally cars, have been disregarding the rules and tearing across these historic artworks.

Members of the Fundación have expressed their concern and dismay at the situation, as the damage is becoming irreparable. According to the NYT, off-roaders are making them part of their playground without concern for the long-lasting implications.

Data From Drone Surveys Underscores the Severity

A drone survey of an impact site demonstrated the extent of damage these ancient symbols have undergone, with some almost being entirely erased from the landscape.

“When we saw the drone footage, we couldn’t believe it,” stated Dr. Pimentel, emphasizing that the damage was irreversible. “Vehicle tracks will remain there like the geoglyphs, a museum of ‘never again.'”

Rallies: More Questions than Answers

While some argue that professional race organizers are responsible, concerns remain about the government’s stance on protecting these sites and the lack of prosecution of careless vandals. The Atacama Rally, for instance, goes through the region with claims of not routing their route through the glyphs; however, regional officials struggle to verify this information and suspect that the organizers deny auditing their route.

Additionally, local residents are increasingly anxious about the damage inflicted and its potential impact on their livelihoods, since these sites are crucial tourist attractions.

Emerging Patterns: Accountability Required

Although not all geoglyph sites are equally harmed, the damage will only intensify unless the off-roading community takes greater ownership of their actions.

Like all enthusiasts, off-road enthusiasts must recognize their collective influence and the consequences their activities have on the world they enjoy.
