Death Stranding 2: The Most Bizarre and Surreal Cutscenes Revealed
At the Tokyo Game Show, Hideo Kojima, the renowned game designer, unveiled nearly eight minutes of never-before-seen cutscenes from the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The new footage, released in English, showcases the game’s peculiar and thought-provoking story, leaving fans both intrigued and perplexed.
A Submarine, a Ship, and a Strange Crew
The first scene takes us aboard the Submarine That Makes You Blue, where Sam Porter Bridges, played by Norman Reedus, and Léa Seydoux’s Fragile are on a trip to the ship’s bridge. As they navigate through the dark, eerie environment, Sam’s still getting his bearings and meeting members of the crew. This might be near the start of the game, given the uncertainty and unfamiliarity of the surroundings.
Meet Tarman, the Magellan’s Doctor and Geophysicist
The ship’s name is revealed to be the DHV Magellan, and Fragile remarks that "it’s always like this when the DHV Magellan is on the move." This phrase could refer to the strange, death-goop-covered environment, as well as the blue-grey skin of the crew members. Sam meets Tarman, played by George Miller, who is the Magellan’s doctor and geophysicist. Tarman pilots the submarine and is equipped with an exoskeleton.
A Tearful Reunion
Fragile sheds a thematically important single tear (more on this later!), and Sam has his first meeting with the kooky, quarter-rate-animated puppet we all loved in the earlier trailer. The puppet, once a man, lost his spirit medium powers when he adopted his new form and is now "alive and his own master." His name is Dollman.
Death Stranding 2’s Photo Mode
The fourth clip showcases Death Stranding 2’s photo mode, where Sam takes pictures of Fragile, Rainy, and Tomorrow as they giggle, dance, and strike various poses throughout the Magellan. This mode seems to focus on capturing the beauty and surrealism of the game’s world.
Musical Numbers and Heart Attacks
The third clip sees the return of Nicholas Winding Refn’s likeness for Heartman, who has a heart attack and dies once every 21 minutes before being revived by an automated defibrillator. Heartman now sports heart-shaped glasses and a Huey Emmerich-style exoskeleton. He inexplicably sheds and collects a single tear before addressing Sam and Dollman. Heartman declares, "Thanks to this support unit, I can flatline anytime, anywhere without worry."
Holographic Heart and Rainy’s Pregnant Belly
The final clip features another musical number, this time with Dollman dancing along with holograms of himself and Japanese pop musician Daichi Miura to a new, original composition by Miura, "Horizon Dreamer."
