Unlocking the Art of Speed: How a Spider-Verse Artist Turned His Initial D Dreams into a Reality with a Miata

From Speed Racer to Storyboard Artist: Wynton Redmond’s Journey to Car Animation

Wynton Redmond’s childhood obsession with anime and racing cartoons has led him to a successful career as an animation storyboard artist in Los Angeles. As a car enthusiast, he’s always on the lookout for scenes with cars in them – a passion that’s evident in his love for his first-gen Mazda Miata.

A Childhood Love for Cars and Animation

Growing up, Wynton spent hours watching Speed Racer and Initial D, which sparked his imagination and fueled his creativity. He credits these shows with inspiring his artistic talent and his love for cars.

A Career in Animation Storyboarding

After moving to LA, Wynton began working on various animation projects, including the 2023 hit Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Despite his success, he still makes it a point to claim any scene with a car in it, as he’s meticulous about accuracy.

Driving and Drawing: A Match Made in Heaven

Wynton describes driving as being in a state of pure flow, similar to drawing. “When I’m driving, it’s just pure flow state, and same with drawing. They’re one-to-one,” he says. “When I’m drawing, I don’t hear anything. Just thinking about ‘line to paper.’ And driving, it’s just ‘line to road.'”

A Passion for Cars and Art

Wynton’s love for cars and art has always been intertwined. He’s a self-taught car enthusiast who’s spent countless hours working on his first-gen Miata, which he’s lovingly restored to perfection. “Some people want to have their car be a complete project, but I’m really happy to just always find something new to do it and keep tweaking it forever,” he says.

A Dream Project Come True

Wynton had the opportunity to work on a dream project: an Initial D-style Toyota GR86 commercial. This project allowed him to combine his love for cars and animation, creating a stunning visual experience. “It’s like a movie scene. Once I get driving and the car is heated up, I’m like, ‘OK, now is when the scene starts,'” he says.
