Delta, one of the most popular emulators on the Apple App Store, has just received a significant update. The emulator now supports online multiplayer for Nintendo DS games, a feature that’s been missing since Nintendo shut down its official online multiplayer service for the DS and Wii a decade ago.

What’s the big deal?

For those who may not be familiar, Delta is an emulator that allows users to play various games on their iOS devices. The emulator has received several notable updates already, but this latest addition is a major step forward. Online multiplayer for Nintendo DS games was previously limited to third-party services, but Delta’s new update brings this feature to the masses.

How does it work?

Developer Riley Testut confirmed that the beta version of Delta will receive online multiplayer support for Nintendo DS games. This beta version will initially be available to Patreon subscribers. The emulator is harnessing the MelonDS emulator’s support for third-party online multiplayer services.

What games can I play?

There are plenty of Nintendo DS games with online multiplayer capabilities. Some popular titles include Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, Diddy Kong Racing DS, Clubhouse Games, and a ton of Pokémon games.

What’s the significance?

This update is another example of third-party developers picking up where console manufacturers left off. We’ve seen similar examples in the past, such as Xbox Live being resurrected for the original Xbox via the Insignia service, and the Dolphin emulator allowing online multiplayer for games that only support local multiplayer.
