Netflix’s Devil May Cry Anime in Crisis: Johnny Yong Bosch Voicing Dante Despite Vocal Confusion
Netflix’s Devil May Cry Anime Trailer Teases Impressive Voice Acting
As part of Netflix’s Geeked Week, we witnessed a flurry of new trailers for videogame adaptations, including a sneak peek at Arcane season 2, a small teaser for another Cyberpunk anime, and my personal standout favorite, a new Devil May Cry anime.
The trailer showcases the iconic action-packed style we’ve come to expect from the Devil May Cry franchise, but what truly caught my attention was the impressive voice acting. In the anime, Dante’s voice actor, Matthew Mercer, does a fantastic job bringing the character to life. The new trailer features Dante and his brother Nero engaging in some intense battles, with the voice acting providing an additional layer of emotional depth to the characters.
But, what caught my attention was the surprising voice behind Nero – Freddy Bosche, known for his roles in Naruto, Blue Exorcist, and Fullmetal Alchemist, to name a few. Some fans have pointed out just how impressive Bosch’s range is: "He’s not like some voice actors who are generally very recognisable. He’s got a surprising range and is very skilled at acting. If he just changes his tone of voice and the way he emphasises things, I doubt people would actually be able to peg him as the voice of Nero."
While some may have doubts, I personally felt that Bosch’s voice sounded familiar – but only for a moment. I have to admit that, when I initially saw the trailer, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of Nero’s new voice actor. But, as I watched the trailer multiple times, I grew to appreciate Bosch’s talent for voicing characters. Perhaps Bosch’s experience voicing different characters helped him create a distinct and convincing tone for Nero?
Interestingly, Bosch’s versatility might just make him an ideal candidate to voice Nero. But, what do you think, dear readers? Would you like to see Bosch stick with his Nero, or do you hope Capcom returns to original voice actor, Reuben Langdon, for the role? Let us know in the comments!
In other news, Langdon’s social media presence has been, well, less than impressive lately. Langdon’s controversy-filled presence online led to a disappointing spaces meet and, understandably, Capcom seems hesitant to invite him back to reprise his role in upcoming games. As it stands, it looks like we might be saying goodbye to Langdon’s voice for now.
Watch the trailer for yourself and decide: Does Bosch do Nero justice?
