Apple Intelligence Public Betas: What You Need to Know

As we count down the hours until the official launch of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple is giving you an early chance to test drive some of its innovative features. The latest public betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 are now available, and we’ve got the lowdown on what you need to know.

Who Can Join the Public Betas?

To get started, you’ll need an eligible device, such as:

  • iPhone with an A17 Pro, A18, or A18 Pro chip
  • iPad with at least an M1 chip
  • Mac with an M1 chip or newer

What Can You Expect?

Keep in mind that these are public betas, which means you might encounter some bugs, slowdowns, and glitches. You may even see reduced battery life. However, the new features are worth trying out:

  • Writing Tools: Available everywhere you write text, this feature can summarize large blocks of text, make something sound more professional, and proofread.
  • Siri with Apple Intelligence: The assistant is better at understanding nuance in speech and can help with tech support queries.
  • Notification Summaries: Get a quick summary of notifications for each app.
  • Clean Up: Remove objects or people from the background of an image in Photos.
  • Advanced Natural Language Search: Create your own memories and search for photos with more advanced language.

How to Get the Public Betas

To sign up for the public betas:

  1. Go to Apple’s signup page and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. Head to the respective software updates sections within settings on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  3. Select Beta Updates and follow the prompts to download and install the public beta.

Enabling Apple Intelligence

Once you’ve installed the public beta, follow these steps to enable Apple Intelligence:
