Unveiling the Elusive 1960s GM V12 Engine: A Rare Find on the Marketplace

The Legendary GM Twin Six: A Rare Beast on Facebook Marketplace

In a world where Facebook Marketplace is often filled with quirky listings and unusual finds, you’ll occasionally stumble upon a treasure that’s truly one-of-a-kind. Case in point: the General Motors "Twin Six" V12 engine. This behemoth of a powerplant is a relic from the past, with only a handful of these massive engines still operational today. And, incredibly, one of them is currently listed on Facebook Marketplace for a mere $4,500.

A Brief History of the Twin Six

The Twin Six was born in the 1960s, with its development aimed at creating a diesel alternative for heavy-duty applications. The engine’s design was revolutionary, featuring a single-piece iron crankcase that stretched an impressive four feet in length and weighed a whopping 190 pounds. With its 11.5-liter V12 configuration, the engine boasted four cylinder-heads, four exhaust manifolds, two distributors, two intake manifolds, and a massive oil sump capable of holding four gallons of oil.

Specifications and Capabilities

Despite its massive size, the Twin Six only produced 275 peak horsepower at 2,400 rpm. However, it made up for this relatively modest output with a staggering 630 pound-feet of torque between 1,600 and 1,900 rpm. This means it could tow an impressive 60,000 pounds up a mountain grade – all on regular 87 octane fuel.

The Rarity of the Twin Six

It’s estimated that only around 5,000 Twin Six engines were ever produced between 1960 and 1965. And of those, only a few hundred are believed to still exist today. One of the most recent examples sold on Facebook Marketplace last year for $2,900. The seller, who had lost interest in a V12 project, offered the engine mounted on a stand with casters for easy moving.

What Does the Future Hold for the Twin Six?

With only a handful of these engines still operational, it’s likely that any that come up for sale will be long-term project builds. To the right grease monkey, however, it might not be a bad price to pay to wrench on a rare and legendary monster like the GM Twin Six.
